Theatre Royal Future Stages - for students

Theatre Royal's Future Stages is a program that aims to provide students in Year 10 to 12 who have a strong interest in the performing arts, with an opportunity to experience productions and participate in discussions and workshops that connect them more closely with the performing arts sector. 
There is no cost to apply or participate in Future Stages.

What you'll gain

  • Year 10 to 12 Students with a strong interest in the arts 
  • You're keen to learn and develop creative skills
  • We encourage applications from Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people, those with diverse linguistic and cultural backgrounds, those who identify as LGBTIA+, and those living with a disability.

If participationg in 2026, please note activities will take place on the following dates;

  • Sat 14 March 10.00am-5.00pm: Intro Session, Tour, attend &Juliet
  • Sat 28 March 3.00-10.00pm: Writing Masterclass with Sarah Hamilton, attend Things I Know To Be True
  • Wed 15 April 3.30-9.45pm: Directing Masterclass with Marni Mount, attend Trophy Boys
  • Sat 9 May 4.00-9.00pm: Masterclass ‘Telling your own story’, attend Lose to Win
  • Sat 30 May 10.30am-10.00pm: Attend The Doll Trilogy
  • Sat 15 August 6.30-9.30pm: Attend Saplings, discussion with Nicole Ingram
  • Sat 19 September 4.00-9.30pm: Live Cinema Masterclass with Malcolm Whittaker, attend POV
  • Sat 26 September 10am-6.30pm: End of Year Wrap-up, attend Deep Dark Tales, Graduation
All dates are compulsory to attend.

FAQ

    Anyone in years 10-12 who is interested in growing their knowledge and experience of the performing arts.

    This program is free to apply for and participate in.

    Yes; practicing discussion, learning about how professional theatres work, and being exposed to high level professional shows will all help with your theatre exams and review assignments.

    Successful applicants will be contacted in the first week of March.

    You will not have to perform. You will need to participate in workshops and offer your opinions on occasion. We have a facilitator with the group throughout the year to ensure that you have someone to check in with if you need support and that everyone gets a chance to speak up if they want to.

    Absolutely not. You could be interested in any aspect of live performance, from tech to reviewing, from writing to directing, from makeup, to costume, to rigging the lights. The more diverse our cohort is in terms of interest areas, the more we are likely to learn as a group

    You might, you might not. This program is an opportunity to connect with people from other schools and areas, develop a network, and practice collaboration. We have a dedicated facilitator who will be with the group at every event throughout the year, so there will always be a consistent friendly face.

    Dates for the 2026 Program will not interrupt your College or school schedule.

    The Theatre Royal, which is at 29 Campbell Street, Hobart - roughly ten minutes walk from the central bus mall at Elizabeth Street

    The Theatre Royal is ten minutes' walk from the Elizabeth Street Bus Mall. If you are in a regional area and unable to reach the venue using public transport, please get in touch via education@theatreroyal.com.au

    This program will not give you time on the ‘main stage’ but there will be practical workshops where you will have a chance to collaborate and perform within the Future Stages group.

    Yes, staff at the Theatre Royal will pop in to introduce themselves through the course of the program.

  • To learn a whole lot; by seeing professional shows that might otherwise be too expensive, and by learning about performing arts from industry experts in exclusive workshops and talks.
