Theatre Royal Future Stages

Theatre Royal's Future Stages is a program that aims to provide students in Year 10 to 12 who have a strong interest in the performing arts, with an opportunity to experience productions and participate in discussions and workshops that connect them more closely with the performing arts sector. 
There is no cost to apply or participate in Future Stages.


What you'll gain

You will be invited along to watch the following productions at The Hedberg.
Specific dates will be discussed with successful applicants.

  • The Trojan War (10 - 11 May 2024)
  • The Mousetrap (11 - 22 June 2024)
  • The Visitors (1 - 3 August 2024)
  • Past The Shallows (22 - 23 August 2024)

Alongside the productions you'll engage with workshops, facilitated conversations with industry experts and access to behind the scenes theatre spaces and technical rehearsal throughout the year.

    Anyone in years 10-12 who is interested in growing their knowledge and experience of the performing arts.

    This program is free to apply for and participate in.

    Yes; practicing discussion, learning about how professional theatres work, and being exposed to high level professional shows will all help with your theatre exams and review assignments.

    Successful applicants will be contacted by 5 April.

    You will not have to perform. You will need to participate in workshops and offer your opinions on occasion. We have a facilitator with the group throughout the year to ensure that you have someone to check in with if you need support and that everyone gets a chance to speak up if they want to.

    Absolutely not. You could be interested in any aspect of live performance, from tech to reviewing, from writing to directing, from makeup, to costume, to rigging the lights. The more diverse our cohort is in terms of interest areas, the more we are likely to learn as a group

    You might, you might not. This program is an opportunity to connect with people from other schools and areas, develop a network, and practice collaboration. We have a dedicated facilitator who will be with the group at every event throughout the year, so there will always be a consistent friendly face.

    Here are some indicative dates of when events will be happening. These are to be confirmed and will not interrupt your College or school schedule. It's a good idea to try and keep them free;
    • Thursday 2nd or Friday 3rd May (evening)
    • Friday 10th May (evening) + Saturday 11th May (day time)
    • Saturday 15th June (day time) + Saturday 22nd June (day time)
    • Saturday 3rd August (day time)
    • Thursday 22nd August + Friday 23rd August (evening)

    The Theatre Royal, which is at 29 Campbell Street, Hobart - roughly ten minutes walk from the central bus mall at Elizabeth Street

    The Theatre Royal is ten minutes' walk from the Elizabeth Street Bus Mall. If you are in a regional area and unable to reach the venue using public transport, please get in touch via education@theatreroyal.com.au

    This program will not give you time on the ‘main stage’ but there will be practical workshops where you will have a chance to collaborate and perform within the Future Stages group.

    Yes, staff at the Theatre Royal will pop in to introduce themselves through the course of the program.
