Future Stages is a development program for students with an interest in the performing arts who would like to learn more about career pathways available to them. 

 The program provides opportunities for  Tasmanian students in years 10 to 12 to experience productions, access behind-the-scenes, and participate in discussions and creative workshops that connect them more closely with arts professionals and pathways to a career in the performing arts. Most importantly, it provides an opportunity to build a strong and supportive community with other arts-focussed young people and emerging theatre makers. The program is free for selected applicants. 

 A secondary objective is to increase school retention for young people at a critical point of their studies in Year 10, by providing insight into the multiple careers and pathways available to pursue a career in the arts and tangible information about how they can access it.   

Chief Executive Vanessa Pigrum says Future Stages is a great example of the Theatre Royal’s commitment to supporting more young Tasmanians to access and participate in the arts. 

“Our aim is to de-mystify a career in the arts by providing an indication of what roles exist – on stage or behind the scenes - and how young people can plan to move towards them.” 

“We’re really excited about the potential of this program to deliver outcomes for young Tasmanians over the long term.”

• Future Stages has helped me so much not only with confidence but also with my career pathway. I’m so grateful to have had this experience! 
   
• I love the Future Stages Program. It has inspired me to look further into touring as a technician with a production company. The opportunity to go behind the scenes at the Theatre Royal and have a look at the equipment was fantastic. 
   
• There’s such a need for young people to learn more about the technical jobs in the arts. I’m now working backstage at the Theatre Royal!

The feedback we have received already from our 2025 Future Stages students has been incredible - from beyond my expectations to It really makes me hopeful for my future.
