It starts here! The Hobart City Dance Challenge is bringing competitive dance back to the Theatre Royal.

Hobart’s newest dance competition starts in October 2020 and is open to performers of all ages.

*Please note that this event is not on general sale to the public. Tickets must be purchased by registering with Hobart City Dance Company and will be limited due to COVID-19 restrictions.  Participants and attendees are asked to please follow these COVID-safe practices listed below.*

  • Only 100 dancers can be backstage each day and each evening.
  • The same 100 dancers will perform across the morning and afternoon sessions (performing groups, solos and duos throughout the day.)
  • Once a dancer has completed their sections for the session they will be required to leave the venue.
  • Another 100 dancers will compete in the evening once the venue has had a full clean (following COVID recommended practices).
  • If there is more than 100 performers in a group section, the sections will be split across two days with the adjudication held over and live-streamed on Facebook after the second day has been completed.
  • Only appointed teaching staff and helpers will be permitted backstage.
  • Each dance school will be allocated a dressing room which will be used for changing. Dancers will then need to move immediately to a holding area to wait for their next routine. Dressing room numbers will be strictly adhered to which is why changing hairstyles or makeup during a session will not be permitted this year.
  • Once the schedule is finalised, the box office will be given each competitor’s name and date of birth and dancers will be notified when tickets will go on sale.
  • Each dancer will be entitled to purchase two (2) tickets to the session/s they are performing in. (Tickets will be available for day sessions-same ticket for morning and afternoon session-and evening sessions.)
  • The names of the ticket holders will need to be provided to the Theatre Royal Box Office at the time of purchase. Tickets are non-transferable and patrons cannot swap their tickets with someone else part-way through the day.
  • At this stage tickets will be allocated as general ad-mission tickets and will be then allocated a specific seat closer to the performance day. This means there is no rush to purchase tickets, every dancer will have plenty of time to contact the Box Office to purchase their tickets.
  • Seating will follow COVID-19 protocols including social distancing. Patrons will be seated in individual seats and will not be permitted to move out of their allocated seat.
  • There may be a small allocation of tickets available for the general public but we will let you know if and when these are available for sale.
