Bedrich Smetana – Piano Trio in G Minor, Op. 15
Robert Schumann – Piano Trio No. 1 in D Minor, Op. 63
Anton Arensky – Piano Trio No. 2 in F Minor, Op.73
After winning the Melbourne International Chamber Music Competition 2003, the Eggner Trio, founded in 1997 by three brothers, has captivated the musical world. In 2006 they participated in the series Rising Stars in major concert halls such as Carnegie Hall, Cité de la musique Paris, Festspielhaus Baden-Baden, Kölner Philharmonie, Mozarteum Salzburg and Musikverein Vienna.
Apart from their chamber music activities, the trio has performed the Triple Concertos by Beethoven and Bohuslav Martinu with the Orchestra Filarmonica dell’Umbria, Tasmanian Symphony Orchestra and the Tonkünstler-Orchester Niederösterreich.
This is an unashamedly big Romantic program. To begin with, Smetana’s piano trio, his first mature work, grandiose, deeply tragic but also celebratory, written after the death of his daughter. Then Robert Schumann’s intensely romantic first piano trio, perhaps his most popular chamber work. Finally, the rarely performed Arensky second trio, soulful and charming.
