Plan Your Visit
We look forward to welcoming you to the Theatre Royal and hope that the following information helps you to enjoy your visit. Please contact us if you are unable to find the information you need. (Adobe Acrobat required for PDF documents).
Visit our Contact page for Box Office details and contact information for our organisation.
The Theatre Royal is located at 29 Campbell Street, Hobart, Tasmania, Australia - download our location map here.
Our Box Office is located on the right as you pass through the main doors of the groundfloor foyer.
Where to Park
If you are collecting tickets from the Box Office, a 5 minute parking zone is located outside. For long term parking we recommend Market Place Car Park, open 24hrs 7 days a week (note weekday daytime parking is in high demand). If you require a taxi you can contact Taxis Combined on 13 22 27, please ask a member of staff if you require assistance in making a call.
The Theatre Royal consists of a main stage and a small studio theatre called the Theatre Royal Backspace. Technical details for the main stage can be accessed here. The Theatre Royal Backspace is home to the Tasmanian Theatre Company, who are responsible for hiring and managing the majority of performances at this venue.
For disability access information for our venues please see below.
Information and ticket sales, including choose your own seat online, is available from our What's On menu on this website; alternatively you can contact our friendly Box Office staff for assistance. Whilst we encourage customers to collect their tickets well in advance of the show to avoid queuing, tickets may be collected from our Box Office prior to a performance on our main stage (please allow at least 30 mins before the show). All ticket sales are final, however our staff will endeavour to assist you as best they can should you require help.
Our Foyer Bars offer a selection of beverages and snacks for you to enjoy during the show; food and drinks are permitted inside the venue (excluding hot items). Our bar staff serve a large number of customers during short periods of time and our bars can therefore only take cash payment.
Our venue is a licensed premise and alcohol not purchased from us may not be brought onto or consumed on our premises.
(please note the Theatre Royal Hotel is a separate business despite the similarity of name).
The Theatre Royal is a Live Performance Australia Member. Visit the LPA website for more information regarding Industry and Consumer Codes.
Assisted Hearing Service
The Theatre Royal main auditorium is equipped with an Assisted Hearing Service. This service offers amplified sound through dedicated headphones or using a neckloop that interacts with modern hearing aid devices. These units are very limited in number and booking is essential. Please contact our Box Office to discuss your needs and reserve a device for your attendance.
Due to the historic nature of the building, the Theatre Royal unfortunately does not have extensive facilities for patrons with a disability. There is however, level access to the Theatre Royal ground floor foyer and the Stalls level of the auditorium from Sackville Street (in between the Theatre Royal and the Theatre Royal Hotel). Accessible seats are held specifically for sale through the Box Office (03 6233 2299) to meet the needs of patrons using wheelchairs or requiring access assistance. The Theatre Royal is unfortunately only equipped with toilets on the Dress Circle level, this is up two short flights of stairs and the venue is not equipped with lifts. Our Front of House staff are always happy to assist in any way that they can.
Please note the Backspace Theatre is accessed via stairs and unfortunately there is no level entry point.
