The Theatre Royal is celebrating the 180th Anniversary of the opening of the Theatre Royal and the first performance on 6 March 1837. Three Tours and a special fundraising Morning Tea are being held as part of the celebrations. All four events must be booked in advance and further information can be found below.

Theatre Royal Velvet and Gold Tour

Take a guided tour of the Theatre Royal and experience the velvet and gold of this beautiful Tasmanian treasure! Hear entertaining stories about the theatre's history, performers who have trodden its boards and the current and future operations of the Theatre Royal. This tour is the general  tour offered all year round by the Friends of the Theatre Royal.

Theatre Royal Stage and Backstage Tour – Lights and action!

The Theatre Royal Stage and Backstage Tour will offer an opportunity to look at the Theatre Royal’s lighting, audio and staging equipment, how it is used and why. The tour will commence on the Theatre Royal stage and then visit parts of the theatre that are not normally seen by the audience. Sturdy shoes, a head for heights and a moderate fitness level (there are lots of stairs) are essential.

Theatre Royal Tour highlighting Performers and Performances

Description – This tour will focus on the incredible array of performers over the 180 years of the Theatre Royal's existence and also highlight the range of performances, including some zany acts. Expect the unexpected. Some visual material such as posters and programs will be available to peruse as well as a short tour of the Theatre Royal.

180th Anniversary Morning Tea at the Theatre Royal

11.00am - 12 noon

Featuring Robert Jarman (performer, director, writer, designer) in conversation with John X (performer) on the topic ‘Tasmanian Theatre and Quirky Theatre Royal Tales’. Hear Tim Munro, CE Theatre Royal, provide information on The Hedberg, the creative industries and performing arts development and enjoy a celebratory morning tea on the stage of the oldest theatre in Australia. This fundraising event is hosted by the Friends of the Theatre Royal (FOTR) and funds raised will contribute to the purchase of sound equipment for use at the Theatre Royal. Please note ticket sales for this event will close on Friday 3 March 2017.
